Despite being a beloved and well-acted sitcom, a few episodes of Friends haven’t held up over time. The show remains incredibly popular, even more than 30 years after its debut. Friends was a massive hit when it originally aired, and it continues to be one of the most-watched shows today.
Despite the cast still having great chemistry, Friends occasionally feels very much rooted in the 1990s, reminding viewers that it’s a show over three decades old. Some episodes haven’t aged well, like when Ross prevents his son from playing with a Barbie, or when Chandler’s dad is the target of insensitive jokes about his gender identity and sexual orientation.
The One With The Rumor
Season 8, Episode 9
The eighth season episode, “The One with the Rumor,” is best remembered for Brad Pitt’s appearance. He was a fantastic guest star on Friends, surprisingly playing a somewhat unlikeable character – a boastful, resentful guy looking to get back at the popular crowd from his high school days. While his performance is very funny, the episode does contain some jokes that haven’t aged well.
The episode “The One with the Rumor,” like many focusing on Ross and Monica’s childhood, frequently makes jokes about Monica’s weight. Many of the episode’s gags center around making fun of her, and these moments feel awkward and uncomfortable to watch today.
The One Where Ross Dates A Student
Season 6, Episode 18
The main issue with this episode, “The One Where Ross Dates a Student,” is Ross’s behavior. When he finds out a student has a crush on him, he doesn’t simply acknowledge it and let it go – he actually starts dating her. He tries to excuse the significant age difference and the problematic power dynamic by saying they connected, which isn’t a convincing reason.
Their relationship stretched on for five episodes, but it consistently deteriorated. Ross even resorted to threatening Elizabeth’s father to keep their relationship secret, yet the show still portrays him as the good guy.
The One Where Eddie Won’t Go
Season 2, Episode 19
During the second season, Chandler gets a new roommate named Eddie (played by Adam Goldberg from Dazed and Confused) after Joey temporarily moves out. Eddie struggles with mental health issues, which the show uses for comedic effect. When Chandler wants Eddie to leave, he unfairly uses Eddie’s condition to convince him that their living arrangement never happened.
Initially, this seemed like a clever way to handle an awkward situation. However, looking back, it’s a clear instance of gaslighting – a tactic where someone manipulates another person into questioning their own sanity. The term ‘gaslighting’ is used frequently now, and often inaccurately, but this situation perfectly illustrates the behavior. It’s especially harmful to someone already dealing with confusion about what’s real and what isn’t.
The One With The Metaphorical Tunnel
Season 3, Episode 4
The episode “The One with the Metaphorical Tunnel” has several storylines, but the most prominent—and concerning—one focuses on Ross and his son, Ben. Ross wasn’t consistently present in Ben’s life, and when he was, he often tried to force traditional ideas about what it means to be a boy onto him, rather than letting Ben develop naturally.
Okay, so in this episode of Season 3, it’s hilarious because Ross is totally weird about Ben wanting to play with a Barbie! Ben loves it, but Ross is convinced he needs to get him into ‘boy’ toys, like G.I. Joe, and keeps pushing that on him. It’s just funny watching Ross try to steer Ben away from what he actually wants to play with.
The One With Rachel’s Assistant
Season 7, Episode 4
During the seventh season, Rachel decides to hire an assistant. She surprisingly picks Tag simply because she finds him attractive, even taking Polaroids of him during the interview. To discourage other women in the office from pursuing him, she starts a rumor that he’s gay. It’s interesting to consider how different the situation would be if the roles were reversed.
Rachel tells Phoebe she’ll keep things professional with Tag, but immediately tries to date him. The show presents this as the start of a big love story, but looking back, especially with everything we know now about appropriate workplace behavior, it’s clearly a problematic situation. It feels like the joke is only funny to the people watching the show.
The One With The Dozen Lasagnas
Season 1, Episode 12
Besides performing as a singer in coffee shops, Phoebe works as a massage therapist. Unfortunately, sexual harassment is a common problem in that profession, and the show Friends touched on this issue in the first season episode, “The One with the Dozen Lasagnas.” The episode depicts a scene where Phoebe is giving Rachel’s boyfriend, Paolo, a massage and he inappropriately touches her and exposes himself.
The real issue isn’t that Phoebe experienced harassment, but how she’ll tell Rachel about it. The show portrays the incident as awkward rather than a serious offense. And it focuses on the emotional impact on Rachel, the one who committed the assault, instead of on Phoebe, the victim.
The One With Ross And Monica’s Cousin
Season 7, Episode 19
The ‘Friends’ episode featuring Ross and Monica’s cousin, Cassie (played by Denise Richards), is particularly cringeworthy. Throughout the episode, Ross is overly eager and makes unwanted advances towards her. This episode, like several others, is hard to watch because of Ross’s inappropriate behavior.
Cassie’s understandably upset to learn Ross has a crush on her, but the fact that this storyline even made it to filming is really troubling. Many people – writers, network executives, and others – had to approve it, and they clearly did.
The One With The Ick Factor
Season 1, Episode 22
Honestly, the title “The One with the Ick Factor” really hits the nail on the head – it’s clear the writers knew they were tackling some seriously uncomfortable stuff in this episode. It’s just…wow. We see Monica fall for someone based on a total deception, and it unintentionally puts her in a really troubling and legally problematic situation. It’s a tough watch, to say the least.
Monica has a one-night stand with a man she believes to be a college student, and lies about her age, telling him she’s 22 when she’s actually 26. The shocking truth? He’s only 17, a high school senior, not a college student. If the show Friends reflected reality, Monica would face serious legal consequences, potentially being labeled a sex offender, and her apartment wouldn’t be nearly as spacious.
The One With The Male Nanny
Season 9, Episode 6
The Season 9 episode, “The One with the Male Nanny,” presents outdated ideas about what it means to be a man. Rachel hires Sandy, a male nanny wonderfully played by Freddie Prinze, Jr., but Ross spends the entire episode doubting his ability to do the job and ridiculing him for being gentle and thoughtful.
The show definitely portrays Ross’s concerns as silly – he’s the only character bothered by the nanny being male. Interestingly, a similar storyline appeared on Modern Family about ten years later, but it was handled much more thoughtfully. In that case, Jay and Manny didn’t object to Andy because of his gender; they were upset that he was making them eat healthy and work out!
The One With Chandler’s Dad
Season 7, Episode 22
The seventh season of Friends introduced Chandler’s biological father in the episode “The One with Chandler’s Dad.” This character is a transgender woman and a drag queen named Helena Handbasket, but she was played by actress Kathleen Turner, who is not transgender. The way the character was depicted on the show has been criticized as insensitive.
She’s repeatedly referred to with the wrong pronouns – he/him instead of she/her – and people don’t respect her gender identity. She also faces hurtful homophobic and transphobic remarks, especially from her former wife. While it was groundbreaking for Friends to include a transgender character, the way the character is portrayed is unfortunately very poor.
