10 Cringe-Worthy Truths About Twilight That Will Change How You See It Forever!
In years to come, people are expected to open their history books and find numerous eras of societal advancement: the Enlightenment, the Age of Exploration…the Renaissance. Not many film franchises have stirred feelings as deeply as this one, which has amassed over $3 billion at global box offices.
The series known as The Twilight Saga began in 2008, sparking a global division among teenagers who chose between Team Edward, Team Jacob (and let’s not forget Team Carlisle!). However, it’s safe to say that hardcore fans will concede that the films have their flaws. Now, as we watch them years later, viewers might find more problems, feel a stronger sense of cringe, or simply experience a wave of nostalgia that wasn’t quite as strong 17 years ago.
Recently, a video re-emerged that depicted background actors engaging in a game of Hacky Sack, seemingly unaware it wasn’t being filmed, at Forks High School during the making of Twilight. It’s fitting that such a mishap would occur on the set of this film, given its production budget of $37 million. In contrast, New Moon had a budget of $50 million, while the final installment, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, cost a whopping $120 million to produce.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that the Hacky Sack mishap isn’t the sole instance where props have seemingly vanished in the franchise. A classic example of this is when Bella reaches for the ketchup bottle in one scene, only to find it empty. Small oversights like these could have been easily prevented without causing much inconvenience to the cast and crew, but strangely enough, they often enhance the movie’s endearing, awkward charm.
Since Twilight was released in 2008, Bella’s clothing style, which tends towards the simple and understated, can be understood. On the other hand, her vampire friends have quite eclectic tastes, given their diverse backgrounds. However, this rationale falls short when considering that they are still attending high school because they are attempting to blend in with human society.
Alice’s haircut is always fitting for a queen, making it simpler to overlook her occasional fashion faux pas. Rosalie, on the other hand, appears more suited for a day out with her brunch companions in Italy than for a typical school day. Edward oscillates between dressing his age and attempting a 30-something tech professional look, while Emmett exudes the ideal image of a teen sports enthusiast.
The Cullen “siblings” vary in age, having been turned between 17 and 20 years old. Among them, Edward is the youngest, which means he retains an appearance that suggests he’s still a high school student. However, they could all pass for college students, allowing them to enroll in more diverse and engaging coursework.
The situation raises a curious point: Why persist in attending public U.S. high schools when the curriculum lacks significant variety? Essentially, these individuals who appear young have repeatedly been exposed to similar subjects, possibly multiple times. Add to this their frequent absences on pleasant days, and it seems strange that they continue trying to blend in as high school students, given that class absences are more tolerated at university level.
Though it’s still enjoyable to daydream about Robert Pattinson’s character Edward being a suitable romantic interest for Bella, the truth is becoming clearer as the series progresses. Particularly in later films like “New Moon,” their relationship flaws become more evident. For instance, when Edward leaves Bella, she sinks into deep depression and starts making risky decisions that could potentially endanger her life.
However, in the initial movie itself, Edward attempts to manipulate Bella following her discovery of his true nature as a vampire. To protect them from danger and keep her parents unaware, she often deceives them. Over time, Jacob develops feelings for Bella, which escalates into a competitive animosity between the two leading male characters in the series. This conflict is eventually resolved when Jacob “imprints” on Renesmee, putting an end to the tension.
Discussing Edward’s unhealthy behavior, it’s worth noting that he frequently observes Bella while she sleeps, particularly when she is alone in her room. This observation occurs without Bella’s knowledge. Upon discovering this habit, Bella appears to accept it uncritically, suggesting a need for a conversation about consent with Bella, perhaps in the presence of Renee, to ensure everyone understands its importance.
It’s clear that Edward’s actions should not be perceived as threatening, but it’s challenging to envision women feeling comfortable with such behavior, even in the year 2025. There are several interpretations through which a stranger observing someone sleeping might be seen as kind or considerate. For instance, he could simply be showing concern.
It’s important to note that the line referring to Bella in the movie has caused some controversy because much of the dialogue in the film is debatable. Regardless, this particular line ended up in the final version, and that’s regrettable for writers. However, it’s worth mentioning that this moment has now become a popular meme, and numerous Etsy sellers have capitalized on its popularity.
Regrettably, the references to Emmett as a “monkey” don’t end at the “monkey” lines, as Rosalie playfully nicknames him “her monkey man” during the iconic baseball scene too. Despite the actors delivering these statements with a straight face, it’s hard to take them seriously in this context. In online discussions, fans often wonder about the recurring monkey motif in the movie, with one Reddit user humorously suggesting that “my monkey man” could replace the Rickroll as a viral meme.
It’s high time we acknowledge: Baseball, an American classic, may hold appeal for those with endurance to get through the games, but imagine a unique twist – “Twilight” baseball. Picture it being played in a storm when vampires’ athleticism would normally be too boisterous. Add to that, listening to Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” while watching. This combo? Pure iconic!
Even those who didn’t experience the initial Twilight craze in the early 2000s or its recent resurgence will recognize director Catherine Hardwicke’s portrayal of baseball, characterized by a cool-toned filter on the scene. The costumes, rapid tempo, music, and unique stunts performed by Jasper make this movie transform baseball into an electrifying game, capturing the interest of viewers who might otherwise find it unappealing.
A Supermassive Black Hole” isn’t the only standout track from the Twilight soundtrack. There’s “Decode” by Paramore, “Leave Out All The Rest” by LINKIN PARK, and whatever Robert Pattinson sings in that one song. Additionally, there are many other fantastic songs included in subsequent installments of the series. During the mid-2000s, these tunes perfectly complemented their respective films, but they also made for excellent road trip and morning drive listening.
Modern teen films in the past seemed to master the art of choosing catchy backing tracks. Regrettably, in recent years, few films have effectively utilized this technique, leaving a slight feeling of dissatisfaction. Film scores remain impressive, and occasionally movies incorporate memorable songs; however, it is unlikely that we’ll witness another era where entire soundtracks become popular hits.
It’s clear that Jessica Stanley, being prone to gossiping and jealousy, may not be the best fit for Bella as a close friend, especially given their high school environment. However, there were opportunities for Bella to cultivate stronger friendships with Angela, Eric, and other classmates. Instead, she tends to focus more on Edward.
Bella often appears detached or remote when she’s around people other than her significant other, hinting at her preoccupation with him. Although the Twilight series isn’t meant to serve as a manual for young adulthood, some might misinterpret its portrayal of teenage love as more crucial than all else, which could potentially be harmful, particularly for younger viewers.
To conclude with a somewhat whimsical touch, at the beginning of the movie, she appeared holding a cactus. This prop seems to be a subtle reference to her past in Phoenix, but realistically speaking, it’s hard to imagine. Was the cactus her hand-carry luggage? How did it get through TSA without being seized? And if so, how did she transport it on a plane without damaging it?
In this succulent, there seem to be an excessive number of enigmas. Perhaps, the set designers and costume teams might have opted for a more discreet method to intertwine the two parts of Bella’s life. Instead, viewers find themselves on the adventure of the mystifying cactus, which unfortunately has no relevance to the movie’s main plot, resulting in unresolved questions.
