The manga Act-Age was quickly cancelled because the author committed everyday crimes that deeply upset readers. This cancellation also left the artist without work on the project. As a result, many fans may find it difficult to enjoy the series, and unfortunately, they won’t ever know how the story concludes.

As a huge manga fan, I’m really fascinated by Bakuman – it’s so cool how it dives into the process of making manga itself, almost like a manga about manga! Both the manga and the anime adaptation are fantastic, but honestly, one thing that always bothers me is how the female characters are portrayed. It feels like a recurring issue with the work of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, and it definitely holds Bakuman back a little.

Bakuman often portrays its female characters poorly, frequently depicting them as bothersome or strange obstacles for the male characters. This problematic treatment is evident even from the beginning of the series, with instances of awkward and unsettling interactions, like the male leads obsessing over a classmate’s appearance or a father dismissively telling his daughter she can’t relate to a man’s ambitions.

The Kamen Rider manga and its adaptations aren’t bad at all – its popularity is well-deserved. However, modern readers might find some things a little difficult to get past. It’s fun to revisit the style of 1970s manga, but sometimes it feels a bit shallow. The older artwork isn’t a problem, but the over-the-top, cheesy way it’s presented could turn some people off.

Unfortunately, the Kamen Rider manga hasn’t been widely released in the West, which makes it difficult for new fans to get into. There just isn’t enough official content available to give a complete understanding of the series. What Western audiences have access to is really just a small taste of the hugely popular franchise in Japan.

The Gantz anime isn’t really worth watching for most anime or manga fans, and even those who enjoyed the original manga might not find it appealing. It’s set in a visually impressive world where agents in black suits battle aliens – think a darker version of Men in Black – but some problematic content detracts from the experience.

Like many older manga, Gantz contains a lot of sexual content that might be off-putting to modern readers. One particularly disturbing example involves a character named Kei, who appears naked and is nearly attacked – a scene that feels unnecessary and isn’t adequately addressed. Beyond that, the story takes a while to really get going, and even when the central conflict – an alien invasion – begins, it drags on for too long without a satisfying resolution.

I found parts of Chobits to be really enjoyable, and it definitely showcases CLAMP’s creative storytelling. They did a fantastic job with Cardcaptor Sakura, which still holds up as a sweet and charming series. However, Chobits feels different. While it’s clear the creators had good intentions, some of its choices might feel a little off-putting or even disturbing to readers today.

The anime Chobits features Persocoms – helpful androids – and a central concern is how these robots are often designed as attractive, submissive women, like the character Chi. While male Persocoms exist, many viewers find the idea of essentially ‘buying an obedient girlfriend’ through the female models problematic.

Both the manga and anime of Elfen Lied are difficult to watch or read, and for similar reasons. While the story has some interesting parts – like its violent action and Lucy/Nyu’s search for acceptance – these are overshadowed by its disturbing presentation and overly edgy content, ultimately making it unpleasant to experience.

Some viewers might be uncomfortable with the frequent nudity and intense violence in this manga. While it attempts to convey a deep message, it feels forced, which is unfortunate because it otherwise effectively combines drama, science fiction, and action. If you’re put off by these elements, you might enjoy darker, but more accessible, manga like Chainsaw Man or Jujutsu Kaisen instead.

Nisekoi is a pretty good manga, but it had the potential to be truly great. While both the manga and anime were popular when they first came out, modern audiences might feel differently about it now. It’s better than some really difficult-to-read series, but there are other, more compelling options available.

The basic idea behind Nisekoi – two students, Raku and Chitoge, forced to pretend to date because of their families’ rivalry – is actually pretty good. The story also includes interesting mysteries, like figuring out the identity of the girl Raku promised to marry as a child. However, Nisekoi suffers from a slow pace and an overly complicated romantic situation with too many potential love interests. Plus, Chitoge’s personality as a harsh and aggressive ‘tsundere’ doesn’t really help things.
