10 Characters From ‘Yellowstone’s Next Prequel
The 1920s storyline on Yellowstone seems to have concluded following season 2’s finale of 1923, but at least ten characters might return for Taylor Sheridan’s next Dutton tale. The ending of 1923 season 2 marks the resolution of Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and the family of Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren). However, Yellowstone is planning another prequel, titled 1944.
1944 continues the story 20 years after the winter of 1924. Characters who made it through the end of season 2 of 1923 may reappear, and with Sheridan at the helm, many actors are eager to take up their roles once more. Although the cast of 1944 is expected to bring in new characters, just as 1923 did after 1883, there’s a possibility that key characters introduced in 1923 could also be present in 1944.
10. Teonna Rainwater
Teonna Rainwater’s Story Continues After 1923
In 1944, it’s possible that we’ll see Teonna Rainwater again, following the events that took place in 1923 when she was advised by Two Spears (Dougie Hall) to go to California. However, her reappearance is crucial for us to understand what happens next in Teonna’s story.
It seems plausible that the story of Rainwater, as we last saw it in 1923, may not have reached its end. This is suggested by the appearance of Teonna, who appears to be connected to Gil Birmingham’s character, Thomas Rainwater, given they share the same surname. The finale of Yellowstone left Thomas’ backstory unexplored, and Teonna’s reappearance in 1944 could not only shed light on her own future but also offer insights into Thomas’ origins that were previously unknown.
9. Spencer Dutton
Spencer Dutton Lives For 45 Years After 1923’s Ending
In the continuation of events seen in 1923, it’s plausible that Spencer Dutton may resurface in 1944. By the end of 1923, Elsa Dutton (played by Isabel May) discloses that Spencer lived until 1969, extending his life by an additional 45 years. The theory behind including Spencer in the cast for 1944 aligns with the typical narrative style of Yellowstone.
After Spencer Dutton assumed control of Yellowstone Ranch at the close of 1923, he would likely oversee it for approximately 20 years. Given that 1944 falls during World War II, the Medal of Honor awardee could rejoin combat. However, the events of 1944 may interweave with Spencer’s war narrative, mirroring the structure of 1923, providing a parallel account of both his military experiences and life on the ranch.
8. John Dutton II
Spencer Dutton’s Son Could Be John Dutton II
In the continuation of the story we know as Yellowstone, I’d be playing the role of John Dutton II in the year 1944. This is suggested because, as we saw in the prequel series, 1923, it appears that Spencer and Alex are my parents.
In the prequel, if Spencer’s son is indeed John Dutton II, this character will appear as he would have been approximately 20 years old in the year 1944, an ideal age to take on a leading role. It’s also possible that Spencer’s son isn’t the character portrayed by Coleman, but regardless of who John Dutton II’s parents turn out to be, he will make his appearance within the next generation of the Dutton family tree.
7. Spencer Dutton’s Widow
Spencer Dutton’s Second Partner Could Appear In 1944
1944 might also include Elsa Dutton, who was introduced at the end of 1923, sharing her account. During this time, it’s mentioned that although her brother didn’t remarry after Alex Dutton’s passing in 1923, Spencer Dutton was involved with another woman. However, we currently don’t have any information about this woman or her relationship with Spencer.
In 1944, Spencer Dutton’s second romantic involvement might be introduced in the prequel series, hinting at a potential second romance for him. However, it’s also plausible that his wife may have passed away by then, allowing for Spencer to have moved on. Alternatively, the year 1944 could focus on another one of Spencer’s sons instead.
6. Spencer Dutton’s Unnamed Son
Spencer Dutton’s Second Son Could Play A Key Role In 1944
In the final episode of 1923, Elsa discloses that Spencer had another child following the birth of Alex’s baby. This child is a son, born to an unidentified widow of Spencer’s. This additional son of Spencer could make an appearance in the year 1944. Such a development might open up numerous plot possibilities, as his relatives may stir up tension among the older generations of the Dutton family.
It seems we have limited information about Spencer’s son and an unnamed widow. Specifically, Elsa Dutton’s narration in the series 1923 doesn’t provide clues about when Spencer might find another love interest. As a result, it remains unknown when the Dutton family had their second child, or how old Spencer’s son would be in 1944. This uncertainty leaves open the question of his potential role on the Yellowstone Ranch.
5. Elizabeth Dutton
Jack Dutton’s Wife Could Return To The Yellowstone Ranch
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, let me share that despite the heart-wrenching losses the Duttons endured during the Prohibition Era, an unexpected survivor emerged – Elizabeth Strafford, wife of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann). As the curtains close on 1923, we see Elizabeth bidding farewell to the Yellowstone Ranch, seemingly distancing herself from the Dutton family. However, in a poignant finale twist, she reminds us that she’s still carrying Jack’s child into 1924.
There’s a chance that Liz, who might return in 1944, could be the one to bring Jack’s son to visit his childhood home. Fascinating theories among Yellowstone fans propose that Elizabeth Dutton could be the widow mentioned without name, with whom Spencer fathered another child in 1944.
4. Elizabeth & Jack Dutton’s Child
Jack Dutton’s Child Could Return To Meet Spencer Dutton
In case we travel back to 1944, it’s possible that Elizabeth and Jack Dutton’s child will feature in the upcoming “Yellowstone” prequel. By the end of 1923, Elizabeth was pregnant with her second child, having suffered a miscarriage during her first pregnancy. While Strafford may relocate to the east after 1923, their child could return to Montana.
In 1944, their child, who was roughly around 20 years old, could have been either Elizabeth and Jack Dutton’s son. If this hypothetical son were a male, he might have been drafted to participate in World War II. It’s possible that after his military service, he aspired to move back to Montana and reside with his uncle. This young man may have wished to learn from his uncle, a war hero and accomplished hunter, as he transitioned into adulthood.
3. Jacob Dutton
Jacob Dutton Could Be The Oldest Known Dutton In 1944
Although it appears uncommon for 100-year-old Jacob Dutton to be part of the cast in 1944, there’s a chance it could happen. Harrison Ford has expressed his readiness to reprise the role of Jacob Dutton, increasing the likelihood that we may yet see more of him. There are several scenarios whereby Jacob might feature in 1944, and they’re quite plausible.
In 1944, if Jacob were to materialize at his current age, he would have been 100 years old, making him potentially the oldest Dutton ever documented. This scenario might suggest that 1944 could mark his passing. Another possibility is that Jacob’s appearance in 1944 could be depicted as a flashback, similar to how Sheridan employed flashbacks in Yellowstone. In this instance, Ford’s character could also appear in such a manner, providing a fitting send-off.
2. Cara Dutton
Cara Dutton Could Still Be Alive In 1944
I’m quite thrilled to share that, much like Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren has expressed a desire to reprise her role as Cara Dutton. It’s not impossible to imagine her being part of the next installment in the prequel series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her potential appearances could be either in flashbacks or the title year, with her character aged approximately a century.
A prequel series featuring Cara Dutton as the protagonist could be even more intriguing than her reappearance in 1944, potentially inviting Helen Mirren back to the franchise and delving deeper into the story of the Dutton family’s matriarch.
1. Alex Dutton
Alex Dutton Could Reappear As A Ghost After Her Death In 1923
In the finale of season 2 of 1923, Alex Dutton appears to have perished, but there’s still a chance that Julia Schlaepfer might reprise her role as Alex in the year 1944. Spencer actor Brandon Sklenar hinted at this possibility, suggesting that she could make an appearance as a ghost, providing a touching tribute to the character. Schlaepfer seems open to this idea, leaving us hopeful for a return.
Although it might sound a bit far-fetched, the concept of Alex Dutton making a comeback could be plausible. After all, Elsa Dutton was sent back to the year 1923 after her death in 1883, and took over as the storyteller for the next saga. Given the established ethereal connection between Spencer and Alex at the end of 1923, it’s not entirely impossible that Alex could receive similar treatment.
