10 Bleach Characters Who Totally Wasted Their Zanpakuto Potential

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you that Zanpakuto, these soul-cutting swords, are undeniably the heart and soul of Bleach! From epic battles won to legendary moments etched into its lore, zanpakuto have played an integral role in this captivating series. Some characters mastered their zanpakuto, evolving not just as warriors but as individuals. Others, however, seemed complacent with theirs, missing out on the chance for growth and transformation. Truly, every character’s journey with their zanpakuto is a unique tale within the broader story of Bleach.

Many of the zanpakuto remained underutilized as they didn’t have enough battles to fully demonstrate their capabilities to Bleach viewers. Furthermore, there were instances where zanpakuto were misused when it came to bankai. Interestingly, some zanpakuto are known to possess bankai, but never displayed it, which is unfortunate. The bankai is meant to be a significant turning point in Bleach, but unfortunately, some wielders never managed to utilize its full potential.

Zanpakuto Name: Gonryomaru

As Lieutenant Sasakibe, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Captain Yamamoto in Squad 1 during the Thousand-Year Blood War, I found myself facing lofty expectations. Regrettably, I fell short of those standards, in both combat and overall performance. Alas, the opportunity to wield my shikai in battle never truly materialized, as Ichigo’s swift intervention left me unconscious before I could fully showcase my abilities – a fact that seems somewhat disappointing when reflecting upon the situation now.

In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Gonryomaru, portrayed by Chojiro, was overpowered by Sternritter O Driscoll Berci before he could fully demonstrate his abilities. For a brief moment, Chojiro’s electric shinkiro (bankai) was employed, only for it to be taken away by Driscoll. Subsequently, Driscull utilized the bankai more than Chojiro did himself, leaving Bleach fans intrigued about the untapped power of Gonryomaru and its bankai.

Zanpakuto Name: Ryujin Jakka

On one side, Shigekuni Yamamoto effectively employed his shikai, as seen when he effortlessly defeated enemies with Ryujin Jakka’s intense might. He even cornered the three traitorous Captains within a wall of fire and nonchalantly burned three Sternritter who assaulted him during the Soul Society invasion. In the end, Yamamoto unveiled his bankai, but unfortunately used it against the wrong adversary.

Fans of Bleach may not blame Yamamoto too harshly for falling for Sternritter Y’s trickery, yet they were still disappointed in his use of his bankai. He employed its immense power to vanquish a decoy, only for Yhwach to seize that bankai before it could be utilized again. The Zanka no Tachi was meant to be the bankai to subdue Yhwach, but this never occurred, and that was Yhwach’s plan all along.

Zanpakuto Name: Tachikaze

In the narrative of Bleach, Kensei Muguruma’s performance was somewhat subpar. He managed to effectively employ Tachikaze’s shikai on several occasions, yet when it came to unleashing his bankai, he failed to utilize its potential effectively. Kensei had the ability to continuously detonate targets struck by his fists, but during his battle against Sternritter S Mask de Masculine, this skill proved ineffective.

In a less formal manner: Kensei underestimated Mask, not fully utilizing his powerful bankai against that Sternritter. Regrettably, Kensei didn’t exploit his bankai much further, leaving Bleach fans curious about what it would look like when he truly finishes an opponent with Tachikaze. It seems extremely improbable that we’ll ever witness Kensei using Tachikaze again in any significant way.

Zanpakuto Name: Sakanade

In a turn of events, Aizen outsmarted Shinji’s shikai abilities, leaving Shinji feeling helpless and with limited choices. However, during a confrontation with aggressive Quincy, Shinji revealed Sakanade’s bankai.

In a skirmish, Shinji successfully overpowered a band of Soldat using his bankai, skillfully guiding them into attacking each other instead of him. However, when it came to facing Sternritter E Bambietta Basterbine, he showed an uncharacteristic restraint. Regrettably, this decision allowed Bambietta to exploit the situation and attack Shinji, continuing her battle against the Gotei 13.

Zanpakuto Name: Suzumushi

Initially, viewers witnessed Tosen using his abilities during the Soul Society arc; however, he was unable to harm Kenpachi with his shikai’s power of summoning blades from nowhere. Tosen then attempted to defeat Kenpachi by employing his bankai that disorients senses, but Kenpachi cleverly devised a brutal method to break free from the effects.

Since his bankai was thwarted during that battle, Tosen has chosen not to utilize it again, even when engaging Aizen’s adversaries in the simulated Karakura Town. Instead, Tosen abandoned his zanpakuto and displayed his Hollow form, Grillar Grillo, which ultimately proved detrimental to him.

Zanpakuto Name: Kinshara

Remarkably, Rojuro’s bankai shares a vague resemblance to Captain Kyoraku’s, as they both manifest as artistic masterpieces that ultimately result in the foe’s demise. Intriguingly, Rojuro’s zanpakuto, Kinshara, is capable of staging a musical performance with its bankai activation, and it seems to claim the enemy’s life once the performance has ended.

In the series of Bleach, it was never demonstrated how Kinshara’s bankai delivers the final strike, because Mask de Masculine shattered his own eardrums to nullify the impact of this bankai’s melodic abilities. Later, when Mask launched his star-shaped long-range attack, Rojuro could not shield himself with his bankai. Instead, he remained stationary, succumbing in a single strike and bringing shame upon himself as a Captain.

Zanpakuto Name: Sogyo no Kotowari

Ukitake refrained from engaging in combat during the Wandenreich attack and also failed to unleash his shikai during the Sternritter invasion. However, he decided to change his approach and summoned Mimihagi, which is known as the Soul King’s right hand.

In the course of events, he perished, leaving Ukitake’s bankai shrouded in enigma, and this seems like an unnecessary loss from every perspective.

Zanpakuto Name: Sanpo Kenju

In the spectator’s seat, Lieutenant Yachiru Kusajishi found joy in observing and offering insights as Captain Zaraki clashed with warriors such as Ichigo Kurosaki and Nnoitora Gilga. Over time, viewers grew accustomed to Yachiru’s modest part as Kenpachi’s supporter and companion. However, she was destined for more. Upon unleashing her shikai, Sanpo Kenju, Yachiru took action but the outcome fell somewhat short of expectations.

Yachiru’s Shikai possesses an extraordinary trait: when she unleashes a dual attack, at least one strike is guaranteed to connect. This skill might have proven incredibly effective against less powerful Sternritter, but it remained unused in that context. Typically humble, Yachiru employed her Shikai against the Sternritter and, as always, left the heavy lifting to Kenpachi.

Zanpakuto Name: Kyoka Suigetsu

Instead of instilling fear and excitement among anime enthusiasts with their highly-awaited ultimate moves, Aizen took a peculiar route. He heightened expectations by incorporating the Hogyoku, transforming into a Hollow-like entity, yet this wasn’t the spectacle that Bleach fans were eagerly waiting for. Fans were simultaneously apprehensive and hopeful about Aizen unveiling his bankai, but in the end, he never so much as hinted at possessing one.

Fans can only wonder about the full extent of Kyoka Suigetsu’s might. Over many years, its shikai has been used to manipulate countless Soul Reapers, concealing Aizen’s real plans. In numerous battles, this shikai proved useful as Aizen generated false images of himself or deceived Toshiro Hitsugaya into attacking Momo Hinamori.

Zanpakuto Name: Katen Kyokotsu

Captain Shunsui Kyoraku demonstrated impressive abilities using his weapon, Katen Kyokotsu, notably during his battle against Coyote Starrk where he employed its lethal games. Regrettably, in the Thousand-Year Blood War, Shunsui refrained from engaging in significant combat until he encountered Sternritter X, Lille Barro. It was then that Shunsui unveiled his bankai, a powerful mythical narrative, but it proved ineffective.

In the battle, Lille Barro managed to withstand Shunsui’s powerful attack due to what seemed like divine protections. Consequently, it was up to Lieutenant Nanao Ise to counter Lille’s power and vanquish him. On a positive note, this situation offered Nanao an opportunity to demonstrate her abilities, but unfortunately, Katen Kyokotsu did not perform as well as expected. Given its past performance, it appears that the weapon of the Gotei 13’s top commander is not up to par.
