10 Biggest DC Comics Superheroes With No Live-Action Adaptation, Ranked

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought most Marvel Comics superheroes to life on screen, but the DC Universe still has a lot of ground to cover. Many DC characters, both well-known and lesser-known, aren’t yet familiar to mainstream audiences – heroes like Plastic Man and Powergirl, for example. If and when these characters do appear in live-action films, they could become major stars, just like Iron Man did when Robert Downey Jr. took on the role.

While characters like Booster Gold and Zatanna have appeared in shows such as Smallville—though even dedicated comic book fans might not realize it—many other DC superheroes haven’t yet made their live-action debut in movies or on television.

10
Captain Atom

Captain Atom is incredibly powerful, ranking among the strongest heroes in the DC Universe. He gained his abilities after a government experiment involving the Quantum Field transformed him. His metallic skin lets him absorb and redirect energy, making him a visually exciting character for live-action. There’s speculation he’ll appear in the second season of James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, potentially bringing his story to the screen soon.

9
Power Girl

Power Girl is essentially the Supergirl from another universe (Earth-Two), but with some key differences. While she’s still related to Superman (Kal-El), her name is Kara Zor-L, a nod to the creators of early Superman comics. Usually part of the Justice Society of America in her world, she’s had many adventures that have taken her across different universes. With the DC Universe now exploring the idea of multiple universes, Power Girl would be a great addition to the group of heroes related to Superman and Supergirl.

8
Mister Miracle

Okay, so Mister Miracle—Scott Free—has this amazing backstory. He grew up on Apokolips, which is basically the nightmare planet ruled by Darkseid, but he managed to escape and came to Earth hoping for a normal life. Of course, being married to Big Barda, another powerful New God, means ‘normal’ doesn’t really stick! He keeps getting pulled back into these huge, cosmic adventures in the DC Universe. When Tom King did that incredible Mister Miracle series a few years ago—it even won an Eisner Award—everyone immediately thought it would make a fantastic movie or show. And now it’s actually happening! King’s involved in bringing Mister Miracle to life as an animated series within the new DCU, and there’s even talk of a live-action version down the line. I’m seriously excited about this one.

7
Big Barda

Big Barda began her life on the harsh planet Apokolips, serving the tyrannical Darkseid. She ultimately rebelled against him and her fellow warriors, the Female Furies, led by Granny Goodness, and became a hero. She teamed up with Mister Miracle to fight Darkseid, often with assistance from the Justice League. Her love story with Scott Free is considered one of the greatest in superhero comics, alongside iconic couples like Lois Lane and Clark Kent, and Batman and Catwoman. Given her powerful warrior skills and background, similar to Wonder Woman, Big Barda would be a strong addition to a live-action film or series.

6
Animal Man

As a huge comic book fan, I’ve always loved Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man. It’s a bit of a hidden gem in the DC Universe, honestly. The character, Buddy Baker, can copy the powers of any animal, which is already awesome, but Morrison took it to another level. His stories were so unique and self-aware – he’d constantly play with the fact that it was a comic book, kind of like Deadpool. It even delved into the relationship between the writer and the character, which was really groundbreaking at the time. I truly believe if they made a movie or TV show based on Morrison’s Animal Man, it could be huge!

5
Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner)

Despite being a well-liked character in the 1990s, Kyle Rayner hasn’t been included in the modern DC Universe alongside other Green Lanterns like Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart. He stood out as the team’s Green Lantern in the Justice League of America and was unique because he lived in Los Angeles, a real-world city. As a comic book artist, Kyle used his Green Lantern powers in imaginative and creative ways. His stories often focused on his personal growth, adding a fresh perspective to the Green Lantern mythos, which makes his absence from the DCU and on-screen adaptations disappointing to fans. With the upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns, he remains the most popular human Green Lantern yet to make an appearance.

4
Plastic Man

Plastic Man is a DC superhero often linked to the 1990s, in part because of his retro costume. He’s known as one of the Justice League’s funniest members. Originally a criminal named Patrick O’Brian, he gained the ability to stretch and reshape his body after a chemical accident. His powers match his big personality, making him a uniquely creative and flexible hero in comic books. Despite his impressive abilities, Plastic Man hasn’t yet made an appearance in any live-action films or television shows, leaving a lot of potential for visually exciting adaptations.

3
The Question

DC Comics boasts a number of superheroes who also solve mysteries, including well-known figures like Batman and Martian Manhunter. Despite this rich history, the Question – a character created by Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko – hasn’t yet appeared in a live-action movie or TV show. Known for his distinctive faceless appearance, the Question often tackles complex philosophical themes and investigates conspiracies, sometimes feeling even more realistic than Batman. The mantle of the Question is later taken up by Renee Montoya, a detective from Gotham City, and many fans are eager to see her version of the character in the DC Universe. Both Vic Sage and Renee Montoya have strong support from fans who want to see them brought to life on screen, but so far, neither has made an appearance in live-action.

2
Batman (Terry McGinnis)

Although there have been several tries, a live-action Batman Beyond movie hasn’t happened yet. Fans of the original animated show recall how teenager Terry McGinnis discovered the elderly Bruce Wayne was the former Batman. Set in a futuristic 2019, Terry takes on the role of Batman after his father’s murder, becoming a new hero for a new era. He faces threats like a Joker-inspired gang called “the Jokerz,” as well as villains like Inque, the Dee Dee Twins, and Ghoul, all while protecting Neo-Gotham. The show’s first episode, “Rebirth,” which tells Terry’s origin story, could easily be adapted into a live-action film with enough funding.

1
Static

Static Shock, a popular character from the DC Animated Universe in the early 2000s, is ripe for a live-action series or movie. While a film produced by Michael B. Jordan was previously planned, it never materialized. The original comic, published by Milestone Media in partnership with DC Comics, centers on Virgil Hawkins, a teenager in Dakota City who gains electromagnetic powers after a chaotic event called “the Big Bang.” Like heroes such as Spider-Man and Blue Beetle, Virgil is known for his humor and relatable high school experiences. The series also boasts a compelling cast of villains – including Ebon, Hot Streak, and Talon – who could be fantastic additions to a live-action adaptation.

As James Gunn’s new DC Universe gains momentum, we’re likely to see many popular DC heroes brought to life on screen. Fans are hoping these adaptations stay true to the comics. Luckily, DC has a huge library of characters that haven’t been featured in movies or TV shows yet, leaving plenty of possibilities for the future.
