A key part of being a helpful, local hero is being a team player. Throughout his comic book history, Spider-Man has often been quick to team up with others – including heroes, those who walk the line between good and evil, and even, on occasion, villains.
While some superhero partnerships seem natural, others unexpectedly become popular with fans – even if they aren’t well known to comic book readers. Some of the best Spider-Man stories actually come from his more unusual team-ups throughout his history.
Marvel Team-Up #43-44 (1976)
Even though he’s often seen as a solitary figure, Doctor Doom has surprisingly joined forces with various heroes several times. This is also true for Spider-Man. In a memorable Marvel Team-Up story, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, and Vision are transported through time and find themselves in the middle of the Salem Witch Trials.
Spider-Man and Doctor Doom reluctantly team up when the powerful Dark Rider tries to steal the magical abilities of both Doctor Doom and the Scarlet Witch. Although Scarlet Witch ultimately proved most effective against Dark Rider, the combined efforts of Spider-Man and Doctor Doom were crucial to the heroes’ win. While they’ve worked together on other occasions, their fight against Dark Rider is still considered one of their most memorable collaborations.
The Amazing Spider-Man #503-504 (2004)
Loki was a troublemaker in Marvel Comics for years before becoming known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s why it was so surprising and interesting to finally see him reveal a more vulnerable side and work alongside the heroes.
Loki was shocked when the ancient sorceress Morwen took control of his daughter, Tess Black, but he unexpectedly found an ally in Spider-Man to defeat her. The two shared a lighthearted moment over hot dogs, and Loki, feeling unusually good, offered Spider-Man a single favor to be used whenever needed. This was one of the first genuinely positive interactions for Loki, and it seemed fitting that Spider-Man was the one who drew it out of him.
Marvel Team-Up (Vol. 4) #1-3 (2019)
An explosion at an Empire State University conference, caused by Jackal, led to a body swap between Spider-Man and Kamala Khan. Spider-Man found himself inhabiting Kamala’s teenage form and living with her family, while Kamala unexpectedly had to deal with adult life in Peter Parker’s body. This unusual situation created a remarkably entertaining Marvel team-up – though it did mean Peter briefly experienced things like menstruation as part of the switch.
Dr. Rosario, the scientist responsible for switching their bodies, eventually helped the two New York heroes return to normal. However, like many Spider-Man stories, their memories of the experience were erased, meaning they don’t recall ever having swapped places.
Marvel Team-Up Annual #2 (1979)
Spider-Man and The Hulk are often paired together in Marvel comics, but a less well-known team-up appears in Marvel Team-Up Annual #2. Though there are many famous adventures with these two heroes, it’s always interesting to explore some of their more unusual stories.
When nuclear physicist Daniel Ironwood and his daughter, Cissy (who was Peter Parker’s date), were kidnapped by Soviet super-soldiers – Crimson Dynamo, Darkstar, and Vanguard – a crisis began. The Soviets wanted Ironwood to build a powerful doomsday weapon for them during the Cold War, but Spider-Man and The Hulk intervened. The Hulk especially played a crucial role, catching dangerous spheres hurtling towards Earth and saving everyone, though it left him unconscious.
Spider-Man/Human Torch (2005)
In 2005, writer Dan Slott created a five-part story that beautifully captured the ups and downs of friendship, particularly between Peter Parker and Johnny Storm. The story traces their relationship from its competitive beginnings to a mature understanding and appreciation of their connection despite their different personalities.
Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four have a long-standing connection, but his friendship with the Human Torch is especially strong. Their close bond eventually leads to Spider-Man joining the team – later known as the Future Foundation – and they made an excellent duo when working together.
Spider-Man/Deadpool (2016)
The dynamic between Spider-Man and Deadpool in their team-ups from 2016 to 2019 largely revolves around Deadpool’s desire to impress Spider-Man. However, he constantly struggles to control his extremely violent tendencies, which clash with Spider-Man’s strong sense of right and wrong.
The Spider-Man/Deadpool comic series started with a funny premise: Deadpool desperately tried to befriend Spider-Man, not knowing who he was! Their connection quickly became a hilarious and beloved partnership, making them a favorite duo for Marvel fans. Deadpool is determined to forge this friendship, no matter what it takes.
FF #1 (2011)
Remembering the strong bond between Spider-Man and the Human Torch, the Human Torch asked Spider-Man to join the Fantastic Four if anything ever happened to him. When the Human Torch seemingly disappeared in the Negative Zone, Peter Parker honored his friend’s request and stepped in to support the Fantastic Four during a difficult time.
When Johnny Storm was unavailable, Peter Parker joined the Future Foundation. During this time, Spider-Man fought alongside the team against huge threats, including a group of evil versions of Reed Richards from across the multiverse – a truly epic storyline. Any Spider-Man fan should definitely read Future Foundation, as it shows him as a dedicated member of a superhero team, rather than just a guest appearance.
Daredevil (Vol. 5) #9 (2016)
It was inevitable that Spider-Man and Daredevil would eventually team up. As two of New York City’s most famous heroes, they’ve worked together many times in Marvel Comics history, and those collaborations have always been exciting.
A lesser-known story appears in Daredevil #9 and is set in Hong Kong. It features Matt Murdock facing off against Alexander Apex, a mutant with telepathic abilities, during a risky poker game. Because of his blindness, Murdock manages to counter Apex’s powers, creating a suspenseful encounter. However, the real reason Murdock is there is to recover stolen legal documents belonging to the Chinese government. To help him, he calls on Spider-Man, who’s wearing his advanced Spider-Armor. Together, they fight through mercenaries across Hong Kong and successfully retrieve the information.
Marvel Team-Up #150 (1984)
The original Marvel Team-Up series ended with a battle against not one, but two Juggernauts! It turns out that after trying to gift Black Tom Cassidy the Ruby of Cyttorak as a birthday present, Juggernaut unexpectedly split into two separate, incredibly powerful mutants, creating double the trouble for Spider-Man.
Okay, so things got crazy! The X-Men showed up to help me fight two Juggernauts – yeah, you read that right. Eventually, I managed to launch this ruby thing way out into space, which finally stopped everything from going totally nuts. Sadly, it also meant the end of our Marvel Team-Up adventures. But hey, at least a new comic called Web of Spider-Man started up after that, so it wasn’t all bad!
Spider-Men (2012)
Killing off Peter Parker was a brilliant decision that comic book fans immediately embraced. Even though Peter Parker had already died in the ‘Ultimate’ comic series, he was still alive and well in the main Marvel universe, making a crossover event between the two versions a natural fit.
The five-part comic series Spider-Men features Peter Parker being unexpectedly transported to an alternate universe (the Ultimate Universe) after a fight with Mysterio, who was experimenting with technology that connects different realities. While the story is a fun team-up between two Spider-Men, it’s especially remembered for letting Peter interact with versions of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy from the Ultimate Universe, creating incredibly powerful emotional scenes. Ultimately, Peter and Miles defeat Mysterio, allowing Peter to return home. Before he does, though, he encourages Miles to continue being the hero in that universe – essentially passing the mantle of Spider-Man onto him.
