Anime sidekicks are diverse characters – they can be loyal friends, former rivals who become allies, funny companions, or even partners in mischief. Often, they add levity to a serious storyline and feel more down-to-earth than the anime’s main character, who is usually incredibly powerful or intelligent.
Sidekicks do more than just hang out with the main character; they highlight what makes that character special. Often, a sidekick’s personality is very different from the hero’s, which makes the hero’s traits stand out even more. There have definitely been some amazing sidekicks in anime.
Shiraishi Can Wriggle Out of Any Slippery Situation in Golden Kamuy
Shiraishi is a major source of humor in Golden Kamuy. He’s famous for being the “Escape King,” able to wriggle free from any trap or prison. His cheerful and friendly personality allows him to quickly connect with others, and he soon becomes close companions with Sugimoto and Asirpa.
Though he often seems comical, this character is surprisingly valuable thanks to his quick thinking and knowledge of the streets. Having spent a lot of time evading danger and interacting with criminals, he’s skilled at getting the group out of tight spots. Shiraishi frequently devises escape routes for Sugimoto and Asirpa, and has become a trusted and well-liked friend in the process.
Gaoshun Carries Out His Duties with Precision in The Apothecary Diaries
In The Apothecary Diaries, Gaoshun is exceptionally skilled at his job. He’s a reliable and capable assistant who constantly supports Jinshi, while also handling various other responsibilities. Despite his high rank within the kingdom, he remains humble and treats everyone with respect, regardless of their position.
Gaoshun stands out in The Apothecary Diaries as one of the first characters to accept and appreciate Maomao. He consistently respects her thoughts and abilities, even affectionately calling her “Xiaomao,” which means “kitten.” Throughout the story, Gaoshun has repeatedly come to the rescue when the main characters face difficult situations.
Emul Is a Cute Mascot and Sunraku’s Guide in Shangri-La Frontier
Emul, from Shangri-La Frontier, is a dedicated supporter of Sunraku. She’s incredibly enthusiastic and works tirelessly to help guide him. She goes to great lengths to assist Sunraku, even going so far as to disguise herself to avoid unwanted attention, which can be very draining for her.
Emul is more than just a charming mascot; she actively assists Sunraku in combat using her magical abilities. As a capable and adaptable mage, she quickly becomes a key figure in the story.
Yuji is Sukuna’s Unwilling Intern in Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuji Itadori is the central character in Jujutsu Kaisen, but after accidentally swallowing one of Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers, he became something of a host and ally to the powerful villain. This unexpected turn of events not only shields Sukuna from immediate death, but also allows him to observe the current world of jujutsu sorcerers. And, like a typical sidekick, Yuji continued to strengthen Sukuna by consuming more of his fingers.
Sukuna quickly becomes the main focus of the story because of how powerful and feared he is. Much of the anime follows Yuji as he attempts to fix the problems caused by Sukuna, feeling personally accountable for everything that happens.
Franky Puts on a Self-Serving Facade in Spy x Family
In Spy x Family, Franky is Loid’s source of information and often helps him with missions. Loid relies on Franky’s extensive network for intelligence, supplies, and practical support. Although Franky generally works alone, he frequently ends up helping to look after Anya and Bond.
I’m a huge fan of Franky! He’s such a lifesaver for Loid, always hooking him up with the most amazing and quirky gadgets that really help on his missions. But honestly, it’s his personality – he’s a little clumsy and always manages to lighten the mood – that makes him so lovable. And seeing him gradually become part of the Forger family, even though he didn’t seek it out, is just heartwarming!
Misa Amane Can Do Anything for Light In Death Note
Misa Amane is a dedicated follower and helper to Light in Death Note. While her intense devotion leans towards ‘yandere’ tendencies, Light frequently manipulates and uses her. Although Misa isn’t as cautious as Light, often leaving behind important clues, she remains steadfast in her support of him.
Misa is a risky character due to her reckless disregard for her own safety and intense devotion to Light. While she initially seems like a typical assistant, Death Note reveals a surprisingly complex past. She isn’t simply obedient; in fact, she’s quite unpredictable and has even threatened violence against any woman who shows interest in Light.
Dimple Is Mob’s Fairy Godmother In Mob Psycho 100
Dimple started out as a villain in Mob Psycho 100, but after losing a fight to Mob, he changed his ways. He gave up on becoming a god and decided to stick with Mob, hoping Mob would eventually achieve greatness. Dimple’s playful personality also adds a lot of humor, balancing out Mob’s more serious nature.
I’ve noticed Dimple has a knack for reading people, and he often uses this to help Mob understand what others are feeling. While Dimple usually pretends he’s only helping Mob for his own reasons, I get the feeling he genuinely cares about the boy and wants to see him succeed.
Genos Is a Blind Follower of One-Punch Man’s Saitama
Most characters don’t enjoy playing second fiddle, but Genos from One-Punch Man is an exception. This young cyborg willingly became Saitama’s student and understands just how strong Saitama truly is. Genos’s serious and responsible personality contrasts nicely with Saitama’s carefree and unaware nature.
Genos generally doesn’t show respect to anyone except Saitama and Dr. Kuseno, leading to many funny moments in the anime. He’s incredibly eager to fight monsters and frequently rushes into battle, only to have Saitama casually arrive and defeat the enemy with a single punch.
Shinpachi Is the Only Voice of Reason in Gintama
Shinpachi, often called ‘megane-kun’ by fans of Gintama, is usually Gintoki’s sidekick. He became Gintoki’s apprentice early in the series and has since become the one who keeps everyone grounded. With so many crazy characters in the anime, Shinpachi is the voice of reason, always pointing out how strange Gintoki is acting.
Like many characters in Gintama, Shinpachi seems ordinary, but he’s a surprisingly capable swordsman and a key part of the Yorozuya team. He’s usually with Gintoki, assisting him in battles and other problems. Because he’s the most level-headed of the three, Shinpachi ends up doing most of the housework.
Chrome Bridges the Gap Between Modern Science and the Stone Age In Dr. Stone
In the anime Dr. Stone, Chrome is Senku’s closest and most helpful assistant. He’s unique among those revived from stone because he actively participates in the scientific work. Even without the vast knowledge others possess from centuries past, Chrome is driven by a real love of experimentation and a natural curiosity.
Chrome is a dedicated follower of science, which is why he constantly seeks to learn from Senku and his incredible knowledge. Although he’s still learning the ropes as an explorer, his collected items have been valuable to Senku, and he’s repeatedly shown he’s both loyal and courageous throughout Dr. Stone. He genuinely enjoys assisting Senku with new inventions and feels upset when he isn’t included.
