10 Anime Protagonists Who Were Hated at First but Became Legends
Each series has distinct sub-categories and themes that give them their unique identity. A commonly employed plot device in contemporary series is the “one versus many” motif. There are numerous captivating series, such as Chainsaw Man, where the main characters initially embark on their journey alone. However, much like Denji, most of the principal figures usually gain a few significant companions before they complete their mission.
Some main characters transition from being outcasts within their society to being widely admired by those who once rejected them earlier. For instance, Will Serfort in the novel Wistoria: Wand and Sword initially struggled due to his inability to perform conventional magic and faced disdain from everyone at the school. Nevertheless, through his exceptional swordsmanship and virtuous actions, he eventually gains immense popularity among the students, showcasing that many protagonists strive for acceptance from a world that has previously scorned them.
In the story “Chainsaw Man”, Denji starts off burdened by debts incurred by his deceased father. Growing up without parents, he is exploited by the Yakuza until they decide to discard him once he’s no longer beneficial. His only friend is his cherished pet devil Pochita. In a selfless act, Pochita surrenders its independence to save Denji’s life. With Pochita’s powers at his disposal, Denji gains new abilities but finds himself under even greater threat and scrutiny than before.
Due to Denji’s half-devil nature, many view him with suspicion and doubt his powers. However, he forms an unexpected friendship with Aki Hayakawa, a person who has spent much of his life hunting devils. It takes some time for Aki to accept Denji as an ally, given his profession. Nevertheless, once Aki recognizes the authentic nature of Denji and the hardships he’s endured, he becomes Denji’s most loyal friend.
Born from the loins of Satan, Rin Okumura from “Blue Exorcist” has faced hostility since his very birth. His existence, along with his brother Yukio’s, is often questioned and doubted by many. Unlike his sibling who hides his connection to Satan more subtly, Rin Okumura is known for being a lively and defiant youngster. However, it’s when his true origins are revealed that people’s dislike transforms into outright animosity towards him.
Initially shy about revealing my true nature to my companions, I, much like a character from a Shonen series, find myself in a position where there’s no other choice. Fortunately, through acts of selflessness, I manage to win back most of the friendships I had lost. Despite being the offspring of the devil, I choose to defy him, opting for a path that weakens him rather than strengthening him.
Gabimaru, more commonly recognized by, is generally perceived as a ruthless assassin. He’s a formidable ninja who strikes without hesitation. Numerous lives have met their end at his hands. His infamy has made him one of the most sought-after men across his realm, earning him hostility everywhere. However, appearances can be deceiving; he is not as devoid of empathy as he might seem on the surface.
In a different phrasing: The one-time assassin now cherishes life solely to reunite with his cherished spouse once more. Over time, she subtly transforms Gabimaru from an insensitive murderer into a devoted husband, and he holds her dear for it. However, the chance of reunion hinges on him locating the elusive elixir of life, a task proving to be far more challenging than initially perceived, thanks to Kotaku’s enigmatic nature.
From my passion-filled perspective as a devoted fan, ever since I was a child, Kafka Hibino from the captivating series “Kaiju No. 8” harbored an unquenchable dream. Regrettably, I never managed to scale the same heights as my cherished childhood friend Mina Ashiro; she swiftly outshone me in our mutual pursuit. She realized our shared dream and moved on, leaving me behind with the monotonous Kaiju cleanup duty. However, one fateful day, after neutralizing a Kaiju, I was suddenly intercepted and infected by an enigmatic beast.
The beast transforms him into a Kaiju, making him a key objective for the defense forces. In an unexpected development, Kafka achieves his long-held aspiration with the aid of his new companion Reno Ichikawa. However, once his transformation is revealed, public opinion turns sour, yet some of his newfound allies continue to stand by him. If Kafka can master his abilities effectively, he could potentially take over Mina’s position as head of the defense force.
Asta from Black Clover presents an unusual scenario, as he was first disliked by both his fellow characters and the viewers. His annoying personality often caused distress for fans similar to his adversaries. Additionally, he is continuously targeted due to his inability to perform magic, a common skill in his world. However, he later acquires the ability to use anti-magic, yet remains largely incapable of wielding the primary powers within his universe.
Asta’s anti-magic strength is immense, yet it forces him into close combat with foes accustomed to distant battles. He manages to defeat some of the mightiest adversaries through sheer determination. This relentless effort doesn’t go unnoticed and eventually earns him genuine friends upon joining the Black Bulls. However, his most reliable ally will forever be Yuno, who shares Asta’s dream and was the first to wholeheartedly support him.
Originally, he was the offspring of the individual who once donned the Number 1 headband. As a young boy, his father met a gruesome end right before his eyes, sparking a desire for vengeance within him. This quest led him to seize the Number 2 headband, thereby making himself the most sought-after figure in the world. The only one who can challenge the wearer of the Number 1 headband is the Number 2, but any individual can attempt to challenge the Number 2.
In pursuit of brutal retribution, Afro wages a bloody campaign, eliminating countless adversaries to confront the man responsible for his father’s death. His swordsmanship is unmatched, yet he faces numerous formidable foes in this battle. He even compromises his loyalty to childhood friends to secure the Number 2 headband. Yet, every sacrifice seems worthwhile in his eyes, as it serves to honor the memory of his cherished parent.
In the world of “Wistoria: Wand and Sword”, Serfort isn’t a typical student because he lacks magical abilities. Instead, he’s often ostracized in the school. However, while he can’t perform magic himself, his academic prowess is extraordinary. This exceptional knowledge allows him to outsmart and even defeat some of the most powerful wizards of his time.
It’s worth noting that Will isn’t solely dependent on his academic background. In fact, he is an exceptional swordsman for his era. His remarkable swordsmanship skills and familiarity with technical magic make him virtually unbeatable. Remarkably, even one of his professors, who strives to be among the most powerful magical users of their time, found himself on the receiving end of a strike from Will.
In the anime known as “Fire Force,” young Shinra Kusakabe becomes a member of the Fire Defense Force following an unfortunate incident where he lost his family to a fire during his childhood. Due to his peculiar grin that surfaces when under pressure, there were suspicions that Shinra himself was responsible for the blaze that claimed his family’s lives. Both strangers and acquaintances cast blame on him, leaving him friendless in the world.
Initially, Shinra’s closest ally is Arthur Boyle. Both of them eventually become part of Fire Force Company 8, where they forge genuine bonds and lasting friendships. Notably, Shinra possesses several commendable traits that earn immediate respect from others. He stands as one of the few beacons of hope for the New Tokyo Empire in its quest to save the world and vanquish The Evangelist.
In the story of “Mashle: Magic and Muscles,” we meet Mash Bunedead, who was born without magic in a realm where such individuals are usually eliminated. To dodge this grim fate, Mash is secretly hidden away as an infant. However, when he’s compelled to join one of the world’s most illustrious magical schools, his concealed background is exposed.
Despite being in a fantastical world, Mash manages to thrive due to his extraordinarily powerful muscles that border on comical. Despite his widespread popularity among fans, many people in his village initially despised him. As the host for the Nine-Tailed Fox, they held him accountable for the devastation that occurred at his birth. This irrational hatred cast a long shadow over Naruto’s childhood, making it a difficult and challenging time for him.
A common complaint among fans about the series is that Naruto doesn’t receive a sincere apology despite the way he was mistreated by the Hidden Leaf Villagers. However, Naruto, who truly embodies heroism, isn’t deterred by this and continues to save those who have wronged him. Initially, the villagers looked down on Naruto, but by the end of the series, they express profound gratitude for his actions.
