1 of the Best WW2 Movies Is This Clint Eastwood Film Now on Prime Video
One of the notable World War II movies has moved to a new streaming platform, but with a twist: ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ can now be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Iwo Jima Letters was a significant component of Eastwood’s highly praised WWII saga, which hit screens in December 2006 and earned numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations. Unfortunately, while moving it to a streaming platform can help it reach a new audience, its companion film, Flags of Our Fathers, is not currently available on the streaming service.
The movie “Letters from Iwo Jima” hit theaters not long after “Flags of Our Fathers,” both produced by Eastwood. While “Flags of Our Fathers” was adapted from James Bradley and Ron Powers’ book, portraying the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of U.S. Marines, sailors, and soldiers, “Letters from Iwo Jima,” on the other hand, was penned by Iris Yamashita, offering a different viewpoint – that of the Japanese defenders during the same battle.
The film, titled “Letters from Iwo Jima,” showcases Ken Watanabe as General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, a Japanese commander who bravely defended Iwo Jima for 36 days alongside his soldiers against American forces. This movie also features notable actors like Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Yuki Matsuzaki, Eijiro Ozaki, Mark Moses, Roxanne Hart, Jeremy Glazer, and several other popular stars. The film opens and closes with scenes from 2005, when an excavation unearths the letters that give the movie its name.
Letters From Iwo Jima Was a Critically Successful Movie
Upon its initial release, the movie titled Letters from Iwo Jima was praised by many critics and received a high “Fresh” rating of 91%, based on 202 professional reviews aggregated by a review site. Even 20 years later, viewers have given it an impressive user-generated rating of 86% on the “Popcornmeter”, following over 250,000 individual reviews.
The movie “Letters from Iwo Jima” was financially successful, raking in approximately $70 million while only costing $19 million to produce during its initial theater release. To add to this success, the film was a hit during the 2006-2007 awards season, receiving four Academy Award nominations and one win for Best Sound Editing, shared by Alan Robert Murray and Bob Ausman. It continues to be recognized as one of the most successful films in this regard.
Letters from Iwo Jima is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
