Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about who the big bad guy will be in the next Spider-Man movie, and honestly, the list of possible villains is pretty long! It seems like Marvel is throwing a lot of names into the mix, including Tombstone (who we know is showing up), and then there’s Mephisto, Kingpin, Jackal, the Sinister Six, and even Mr. Negative. It’s making it hard to guess who Peter will be facing off against!
Considering what we know about the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline, a villain connected to organized crime – someone like Tombstone, The Big Man, Crime-Master, or Mr. Negative – would fit the role well. However, despite limited details so far, one of these characters seems less probable as the villain, and it’s because of another Spider-Man project, Spider-Noir.
Spider-Noir Looks Set To Introduce The First Live-Action Mr. Negative
In the black and white trailer for the Prime Video series Spider-Noir, a glowing figure in a suit walks down an alleyway around the 26-second mark, appearing to follow someone. While the trailer doesn’t show a clear view, fans believe this figure is likely the Marvel character Mr. Negative, given the description.
As a big Spider-Man fan, I’ve always found Mr. Negative – or Martin Li, as he’s also known – to be a really interesting villain. He’s actually a relatively new addition to the Spidey universe, first appearing in 2007. While he hasn’t had decades to build a fanbase like some of the classics, he’s become pretty popular, and I think a lot of that is thanks to his appearance in the fantastic Marvel’s Spider-Man game on PlayStation 4.
In Marvel Comics, Martin Li is a formidable crime boss with a unique duality. He has the powers of both Cloak and Dagger, embodying both light and darkness. This is reflected in his actions as Mr. Negative, where he frequently performs acts of kindness to offset his villainous deeds. His darker side allows him to use powerful energy in battles.
Mr. Negative Appearing In Spider-Noir Makes A Spider-Man: Brand New Day Role Extremely Unlikely
Mr. Negative is a major criminal in the Marvel Universe and has a close connection to Silvermane, who we already know is a villain in Spider-Noir. Because of this, his appearance would actually make sense within the show’s developing world. While not entirely unexpected, his potential involvement does clash with ongoing fan theories about when he might appear in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Many fans believe Mr. Negative will be the primary villain in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. This expectation stems from his significant role in the original comic book series that the film is based on, as well as the anticipated focus on smaller-scale crime and gang activity.
It’s not surprising to think Mr. Negative could be a threat to Spider-Man, as seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, it seems unlikely that multiple Spider-Man movies planned for 2026 would each feature their own Mr. Negative, or that Spider-Noir would introduce a version of the character before the main Marvel Cinematic Universe does.
